Choosing a Service Format That Actually Fits
When a manufacturer approaches us about anodized aluminum or champagne metallic finishes, the first question is rarely about chemistry. It is about format: do we need a full production run, a pilot batch, or something closer to a technical consultation? The answer changes what we prepare, how we quote, and how quickly we can start.
For aerospace components, the stakes are specific. A prototype bracket and a cabin trim panel both need consistent color and adhesion, but the volume, documentation, and testing requirements differ. We have found that clients who think through their service format before the first call save themselves a week of back-and-forth. This post walks through the three formats we offer and the tradeoffs each one carries.
Pilot Batch: When You Need Proof, Not Volume
A pilot batch is the right starting point when you have a new alloy, a revised geometry, or a customer asking for a finish you have not run before. We process a limited number of parts, typically under fifty, and run the full suite of checks: thickness, adhesion, salt spray, and visual color matching under controlled light. The goal is to confirm that the process works on your specific parts before you commit to a larger order.
The tradeoff is cost per part. A pilot batch carries more setup and inspection time per unit, so the unit price is higher than a production run. What you gain is certainty. If the finish fails, you lose a small batch, not a full shipment. For most aerospace clients, that tradeoff is worth it.
Production Run: Consistency at Scale
Once a finish is validated, the conversation shifts to repeatability. A production run means we hold the same parameters across multiple batches: same bath chemistry, same racking orientation, same sealing time. We track each batch with a digital record that ties back to the raw material lot, so if a customer flags an issue six months later, we can trace it to the exact run.
The constraint here is lead time. Production runs are scheduled in sequence, and a rush order can push your parts behind an existing commitment. If your delivery date is fixed, we recommend confirming the production slot before finalizing the finish specification. That is the practical detail most clients overlook.
Technical Consultation: When the Problem Is Earlier in the Chain
Sometimes the issue is not the coating itself but the surface preparation, the alloy selection, or the masking design. In those cases, a technical consultation is the right format. We review your drawings, suggest adjustments to the pre-treatment step, and recommend a finish that matches both the aesthetic and the performance requirement. This is not a sales call; it is an engineering review with a clear deliverable: a written recommendation you can hand to your own team.
The tradeoff is that a consultation does not produce parts. If you need a physical sample to show your customer, you will still need a pilot batch afterward. But for many clients, the consultation saves them from running a batch with the wrong parameters in the first place.
How to Decide
Start with the question: what do you need to prove? If the answer is the finish itself, run a pilot. If the answer is your supplier's reliability, run a production batch. If the answer is whether the finish is even feasible, book a consultation. The format should follow the decision you are trying to make, not the other way around.
